The 'primitive style' of movie-making predated classical Hollywood's continuity system. Techniques : Frontal staging or a tableau style, exaggerated gestures, hardly any camera movement, no point of view shot. Early Cinema was silent and unsophisticated more like melodramatic mime.
The Jazz singer (1927) introduced sound to the world of films.
In 1880 the first movie camera was invented and this meant films were able to be made and up until 1927 they were silent films with subtitles added. The first genuine film was Roundhay Garden scene made by Louis Le Prince in October 1888. When showing these films to engage the audience more and enhance their experience the films were normally played with live musicians, sound effects of commentary.
