Narrative in Film

Narrative in Film
What is the difference between Story and Plot?

A story is a series of events recorded in their chronological order.
A plot is a series of events deliberately arranged so as to reveal their dramatic, thematic, and emotional significance.

What is narrative?
A narrative is a spoken or written account of connected events; a story

Define Linear, Open, Closed and Circular narrative structures

Linear narrative will normally go in a straight line or in chronological order.
A closed narrative is one in which all the questions raised by the narrative are answered. Explanations are fully given and there is no chance of an alternative ending.
An open narrative raises more questions than are answered, there are differing possibilities.
A story that ends in the same place it began is commonly called a circular or cyclical narrative.

What are the four types of modular narrative in film?
Anachronic modular narrative involve the use of flashbacks and/or flash-forwards, with no clear dominance between any of the narrative threads.
Forking-path narratives juxtapose alternative versions of a story, showing the possible outcomes that might result from small changes in a single event or group of events.
Episodic narratives are organised as an abstract series or narrative anthology.
Split Screen narratives are different from the other types of modular narrative discussed here, because their modularity is articulated along spatial rather than temporal lines.

The short film that I admire:
The short film that I have chosen is called the root of the problem. It portrays a young woman visiting a dentist in the 1970's, she suspects that the dentist is hiding something and after the anaesthesia is given the young woman becomes distressed and starts to see unusual things. However, when the anaesthesia wears off she is unable to tell whether it was just a dream or real.
This short film has an open narrative structure as it asks more questions than it answers. For example, we are unaware of who this woman is and what she does after the treatment. I feel that is structure does work for this genre and it makes the film seem more mysterious and interesting as you are not given all of the facts, you have to come to your own conclusion.
When decided what I think would be a good narrative structure for a short film I thin kit will depend on the genre and what briefly is the plot or idea for the film. However, I feel the open narrative structure would suit most short films as it allows the director to have more freedom with shots, plot and any arrangements.

  1. You need to blog everything that you do in class Victoria, and your research outside of school, and apply it to your ideas about your short film so that you are analysing and sifting what is relevant to you. You should have posts about the conventions of short films, your analysis of 'Pudding Bowl' and any techniques that you think were effective, and the research methods that you will used based on their advantages to help you research short films, film posters and film magazine review pages.
