One word titles have been used extensively throughout the film industry. They are used to create mystery and let the audience make their own assumptions about what the film is about. There are many examples of one word films that I can look at to gain an understanding of what would make a good film title for me. Jaws is a classic example of this. The plot line for Jaws is 'When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist venue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper and grizzled ship captain Quint offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs mature.' It is clever that the title does not specifically imply Sharks however it does imply to the audience that there is an animal of some sort depending on how they interpret it. This title works with the film as it engages the audience meaning that people are surprised or pleased with themselves on determining the plot.
Another example of one-word titles is Scream. It is immediately clear from the title that this film is going to be a horror as the title insinuates a scare or possibly death. The plot to Scream is 'The sleepy little town of Woodsboro just woke up screaming. There's a killer in their midst who's seen a few too many scary movies. Suddenly nobody is safe, as the psychopath stalks victims, taunts them with trivia questions, then rips the to bloody shreds. It could be anybody...'. Although the audience are able to understand clearly from the synopsis that the film is a horror film., the title is a clever play of the emotions and acts that people do when they are affraid. When people are scared they scream, this title gives off strong emotions about the film.
When thinking about my title and having decided that it would be a one word title as this coveys a strong film. And after brainstorming some ideas for my film I cam up with five that I predominantly like.
These inclue:
These inclue:
- Glimpse
- Desire
- Truth
- Perspective
- Faith
From these I then picked one that I felt stood out to me. This was Perspective. I felt that this was an appropriate title as my short film is all about how deceiving a persons perspective can be and how people can sometimes assume one thing based on their perspective and they can be completely wrong. I also felt that this title had a mysterious feel to it and it did not give away any clues about what my film could be about.
